Recent research has highlighted the potential hazards associated with small children and edible cannabis products. A study conducted in the United States analyzed data from the National Poison Data System and found a significant increase in cases of children under 6 years old being exposed to edible cannabis products, rising from 207 in 2017 to 3054 in 2021, a 1375% increase.
The study also showed that the majority of these cases occurred in a residential setting. Furthermore, 22.7% of patients were admitted to the hospital. This increase in exposure can be attributed to the legalization of cannabis, making products more easily accessible, and the growing popularity of edible cannabis products over traditional cannabis flower usage in both the US and Canada
